THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
OF THE LIVING IN THE TWENTIETH
CENTURY
The
living in the twentieth century is commonly called globalization era. In other
hands, it has changed the world in progression of culture, economic, social,
education, life style and others. The people have modern transportation,
communication, and technology. However, the joyful of people in this era has an
effect both positive and negative effects. Living in the twentieth century
offers certain advantages, such as a higher standard of living but it also has
disadvantages, such as a polluted environment.
The
biggest advantage of living in the twentieth century is the high standard of
living we enjoy. There are some advantages of living in this century like more
money for less hard worker than manual, longer life expectancy, and modern
convenience. This era can be called modernization. The twentieth century has
grown as economic and technological era. Each growth has many advantages in
every aspects of life.
People
do not need work hard to earn more money. In this modernization, they are able
to get more money for less hard worker than manual. Nowadays, they prefer to be
office workers than manual laborers. Manual laborers have been changed into
machines or computer by the office workers. The productions of outcome are
bigger than using manual laborers. They use their mind more than the strength
of their muscle. The effects of more productions, they have higher salaries.
The government services have also increased such social security, unemployed
benefits, and disability insurances.
Health
is still the most important thing for the human even in the twentieth century.
They have an opportunity in longer life expectancy. Many diseases can be
recovered by better medical care. They can find the ways to be better from
disease because each city have more hospitals, doctors, and nurses. The many
advances in medical technology are used as alternative medical treatment and
therapy like blood pressure monitor, pixel-optics electronics for eye glass and
others. The nutrition for health has improved. So, they have more leisure time
because being healthy every time.
There are many modern conveniences
involve communication tools, machines in the home, and faster transportation.
The progression of using communication is facilitate the people to communicate
directly even in far distance by using telephones. They can enjoy the radio and
television as media to get information, entertainment, and any others. This era
provides labor-saving machines in the home such dishwashers, washing machines,
and vacuum cleaners. The faster transportation like plain and train also
facilitate the people who want to move to other place quickly.
Living with the advantages is
incomplete if hasn't opposite effect of those. One of the main disadvantages of
living in the twentieth century is that we are living in an increasingly
polluted environment. The biggest modern develop has biggest pollution that
always appear are air pollution and water pollution as international problem.
Air pollution is big trouble in the world. Smog and nuclear fallout in
atmosphere cause greenhouse or global warming that have influent to all
creatures living in earth. 70% of Earth is water and 20% is ground, however
water pollution is increase rapidly. It makes water become dirty, black and
dangerous. There are many caused of water pollution, such as: chemical waste
from factory that contains dangerous ingredients and toxic In many countries
stated that chemical waste effects are caused of dead fish and contaminate
drinking water supplies. Because, chemical waste is usually discard on river.
Raw sewage from cities has same effect as chemical waste. People distribute
their sewage from their house to drain, then go to river and finish on the sea.
And in the sea, chemical waste from factory and sewage from cities are joined
with oil spills from ships. All the pollution have bad effect to health, human
life and nature.
A second disadvantage of living in
the twentieth century is depersonalization of human relationship. Nowadays,
because of life style and high technology, people’ works are changed with
machine, such as: automated vending machines, banks, etc. In several countries,
vending machines not only sell cigarette or soft drink, but also sell tools,
gadget, or cars. And people can take their money without go to bank because we
can find more automated banks in public area. Other machines that changed human
are tape recorded telephone answering and computerized dating services. People
can play the tape recorded of telephone answering when they back to home and know
all news that recorded on tape. And computerized dating service is connected
single man and single women or single boy and single girl who want to date.
Each person can send his profile and write his couple’s types that he wants to
the server. Then, server matches he with a girl and they can date.
For modernization life style,
numbers become too important in human life in twentieth century. For example is
social security numbers. They are used as individual social security,
administration, index of employee or student, credit record, tax, etc. in other
hands, shopaholic and socialite usually use credit card numbers. Those machines
and numbers are created to help human life style in this era, yet it makes many
people unemployed and become poor. Therefore, width social discrepancy is
appearing as unfinished problem.
The final disadvantage of living in
twentieth century is the weakening of spiritual values. This globalization
increases materialistic culture. Money and possession are important than anything
in life. Those make people become individual and egoistic. And people’ faith in
science instead of in religion. They who live in metropolis cities usually
forget the rules of God. Their mindset is change into realistic that believe in
anything that has evidence and leave the religion that learn about morality.
They don’t realize that religion contains science.
In conclusion, although the
twentieth century has indeed given a lot of advantages by making as richer, healthier,
and freer to enjoy our lives, it has, in my opinion, not made us wiser. The
twentieth century has also made our earth dirtier, our people less humane, and
our spiritual lives poorer. We should continue to enjoy the benefits of
technological advancements because they free us to pursue our interest and
goals. However, we must make a concerted effort to preserve our natural
environment for future generations. Moreover, we should take the time now to
make our lives more meaningful in an increasingly impersonal, computerized
world.
